Families are an essential part of special education.

Family Partnership for Special Education creates a place for parents and caregivers to learn, connect, share their perspectives, and work alongside educators and school leadership to strengthen the special education experience for their school community.

Whether you want to attend meetings, learn more about special education, contribute to a project, or take on a leadership role, there is a place for you in the Partnership.

You don't have to be an expert in special education to participate. You simply need a desire to learn, contribute, and work collaboratively toward positive change.

Help identify common questions, needs, successes, and opportunities affecting families throughout your school community.

Work alongside families and educators on projects, resources, and ideas designed to strengthen the special education community.

Contribute your experience, time, ideas, or leadership to improvements that can benefit families and students throughout your school or district.

What Happens at a Family Partnership Meeting?

Family Partnership meetings are designed to be welcoming, educational, organized, and productive.

Meetings may include:

A short special education learning topic
Partnership and school announcements
Current project updates
Discussion of potential new projects
Family input and feedback
Resources and upcoming opportunities
Action items and next steps

Educational topics may include ARD/IEP meetings tips, evaluations understanding, accommodations and modifications options, progress monitoring questions, related services and how they fit into the IEP, transition planning understanding, behavior supports ideas and steps, and other topics that help families better understand special education.

The Partnership does not replace your child's ARD/IEP team, make decisions about individual students, provide legal advice, or replace established school or district processes for individual concerns.

Choose How You Want to Participate

There are many ways to become involved. You can participate at the level that works for you.

Partnership Member

Attend meetings, participate in discussions, learn about special education, provide feedback, and contribute to Partnership activities.

Project Volunteer

Help with a specific Partnership project or initiative without committing to a leadership position.

Project Lead

Help organize and coordinate an approved Partnership project with other members and participating school representatives.

Secretary

Help maintain meeting notes, attendance, action items, and Partnership records.

Vice Chair

Support Partnership leadership and assist with meetings, projects, and organization.

Chairperson

Help facilitate meetings, coordinate agendas, support Partnership projects, and work with the designated school or district liaison.
