Family Partnership for Special Education was created around a simple belief: families and schools can accomplish more when they work together rather than against one another.
Special education can be complex. Families and educators may approach challenges from different perspectives, and when communication breaks down, those differences can grow into frustration, distrust, and conflict. Too often, the focus shifts away from finding solutions and toward defending opposing positions.
We believe there is another way.
Family Partnership for Special Education creates a dedicated space where families, educators, and school leadership can come together with a shared purpose: strengthening the special education experience for the entire school community.
Through education, open communication, meaningful family input, and collaborative projects, the Partnership provides opportunities to identify common challenges, develop practical solutions, and work toward improvements that benefit students, families, and schools as a whole.
Our approach is centered on collaboration rather than confrontation, shared solutions rather than opposing sides, and lasting improvement rather than individual victories.
By building relationships and addressing school-wide needs together, we aim to strengthen trust, improve communication, and create opportunities to resolve concerns before they escalate into unnecessary conflict.
The Partnership does not replace individual student advocacy, ARD or IEP decision-making, established dispute-resolution processes, or a family's right to seek additional support when needed. Instead, it offers a complementary path for families and schools to work together on shared priorities and meaningful, school-wide improvements.
Our purpose is not to bring families and schools to opposite sides of the table. It is to bring them to the same table, working toward a stronger special education community for everyone.
Our Mission & Vision
The Family Partnership for Special Education exists to strengthen collaboration between families, educators, and district staff to improve outcomes for students receiving special education services. The partnership provides parent education regarding special education processes, facilitates communication between families and the district, identifies opportunities for program improvement, and develops recommendations that support inclusive and effective educational practices.

A Partnership Designed for Special Education
Family Partnership for Special Education creates a dedicated space for families and schools to work together on the issues that matter to their special education community.
Our program brings together three essential elements: family education, meaningful collaboration, and school-wide improvement. Rather than focusing only on providing information or responding to concerns after they arise, the Partnership helps families and educators build understanding, strengthen communication, and develop solutions together.
Empowering Families Through Education
Families play an essential role in their child's education, but special education processes and terminology can be difficult to navigate.
The Partnership provides educational resources and opportunities to learn about ARD and IEP meetings, evaluations, accommodations, services, and other important special education topics. Our goal is to help parents and caregivers enter meetings with a clearer understanding of the process, more confidence in asking questions, and the knowledge they need to participate meaningfully in decisions about their child's education.
We do not make individual educational decisions for families. We help equip them to take an informed and active role in making those decisions with their child's educational team.
Strengthening Communication Between Families and Schools
When families understand the special education process, they can come to meetings better prepared to discuss their child's needs, ask focused questions, and participate in productive conversations.
This benefits school teams, too. Shared understanding can reduce the amount of meeting time spent explaining unfamiliar terminology and procedures, allowing more time for meaningful discussion, collaborative planning, and student-centered decision-making.
By creating opportunities for families and educators to learn from one another outside of individual student meetings, the Partnership helps establish relationships and communication that can carry into everyday school experiences.
Turning Shared Needs Into Meaningful Change
The Partnership goes beyond education by creating a structured way for families to contribute to improvements across their school community.
Families can share common experiences, identify gaps in resources or communication, and help develop practical projects and recommendations alongside participating educators and school leadership.
Our focus is on identifying opportunities that benefit the broader special education community—not resolving individual student cases or placing families and schools on opposing sides.

Families bring firsthand experiences and perspectives. Educators bring professional knowledge and experience. School leaders bring an understanding of district resources, responsibilities, and opportunities for implementation.
Family Partnership for Special Education brings these perspectives together around shared goals.

Most importantly, students benefit from a school community working together to support their education.

How We Work With Schools
Building Strong Partnerships That Last
Family Partnership for Special Education helps schools and districts establish a dedicated space where families, educators, and school leadership can learn, communicate, and work together to support students receiving special education services.
We provide participating schools with a customized program framework, resources to introduce the Partnership to their school community, and an organized first-year plan that includes monthly meeting agendas, educational topics, and opportunities for collaborative projects.
Throughout the first year, the Partnership establishes its leadership, builds relationships, and develops the structure needed to continue independently.
Schools can also access educational resources through our website and request additional customized meeting materials as their Partnership grows.
Our goal is to help every school build a lasting Family Partnership that strengthens communication, empowers families, and creates meaningful opportunities for school-wide improvement.
